About OpenGest
OpenGest is a project of Karee Garvin, a linguist at The Ohio State University. The toolkit is shared to make electromagnetic articulography (EMA) research more accessible.
The tool suite is designed for phoneticians, phonologists, and speech scientists who need reproducible ways to move from raw kinematic recordings to analysis-ready datasets of articulatory landmarks without stitching together bespoke scripts from scratch.
The project covers the full pipeline: preprocessing (smoothing, head-correction, and per-utterance segmentation of raw EMA traces), annotation (deterministic, heuristic-based detection of gestural landmarks such as target achievements, plus a browser-based hand-correction interface for curating the output), and analysis (downstream modeling with GAMMs and linear models).
